Dead Animal Odor

Dead Animal Odor

“What’s that smell?” It’s one of the questions every homeowner dreads hearing, but you will probably encounter it at some point. Unfortunately, the offensive smell may be the odor of a dead animal. Encountering dead animal odor is uncomfortable and can be a real pain since it can be difficult to tell where the smell comes from and whether you have an infestation. Let the Critter Control experts help you with this sensitive problem.

What Causes Dead Animal Odor

Animal odors are notoriously pungent, and dead animals smell particularly foul. Odor often happens because creatures that have hidden in your home thus far have been forced into the open.

Animals like rats, mice, and squirrels will come into the open in search of food, shelter, and warmth. In cases of infestation, they will spread out because they no longer have hidden nooks and crannies in which to build nests. If you find a dead animal in plain sight or can easily identify an odor’s source, your home is probably already infested with the pest in question.

Tracing Animal Odors

If you do not find the culprit in plain sight, look in places pests usually build nests. Suspect locations include dark corners, eaves, chimneys, and inside cars, particularly the tail pipes. Do not remove a dead animal yourself; the corpse may carry parasites or diseases.

For the same reason, do not attempt to clean animal waste. Report the dead animal(s) to professionals at Critter Control of Waco. If you cannot find the source of the odor, call us. Our staff includes biologists and zoologists who are trained in animal behavior and can trace the odor’s origin for you.
